It’s not easy.
Anyone that tells you it is easy is either in a minority of people who are blessed in a few different departments, or they are trying to sell you something that is probably a good idea to stay away from.
Here is what I have learned on my journey so far.
#1. Don’t beat your self up when you go off track. Just get back on track ASAP and move forward.
#2. Celebrate the little victories. Just don’t celebrate them with ice cream.
#3. Love yourself every step of the way, Just because your “end goal” might be vastly different than where you are today, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t pretty fabulous today. Enjoy the journey.
#4. Understand the “why.” Why do you want this? Dig deep and understand the motivation, it will make the harder days easier and the days off the wagon shorter.
#5. The only person you can compare your journey to is you. This is the really hard part for me. Why does she lose fat faster? Why does she move faster? Why can’t I lift as much even if I work as hard? There is zero point to this line of thought.
#6. Find an expert. I turned to the team at Aspire Health and Performance. Coach Andrew has the background I need and the aptitude to discover what else I might need. It’s not everyday that a midlife power athlete walks into your gym looking to address very specific goals with a background like mine. It takes a mix of personality and know how that isn’t always easy to find.
#7. LISTEN to your expert. LISTEN MORE when it feels like everything is falling apart and nothing is happening. Step back and LISTEN again when you want to throw in the towel because it feels like the universe is conspiring against you.
#9. You can do more than you think if you stop telling yourself you can’t.
#10. Sometimes you need to ask the same question over and over and over again. A good coach gets this and will keep answering until you understand the answer so you don’t need to ask again.
So far in my journey the thing I love the most is how I am moving. In everything from wake surfing to walking down stairs my body is responding better. Somedays are harder than others to get my butt in gear but those little victories are starting to add up pretty quickly and motivate me to fight through the tougher days.
I don’t know how to stress this enough. If you are thinking about making a change. DO IT TODAY. Find the expert, pay the money, work and push harder than you every have before. Sweat. Cry. Be frustrated. Fight. Kick something. Pout. Growl. Just give everything you have to it. When you are in the gym, give that time the respect you deserve in this journey. That is the time for you to focus on one thing; your body and how it is moving. Start with full commitment within that time frame and before you know it other pieces of your life will start to fall in line as well.
